The Journey of a Volunteer: From Personal Tragedy to Community Action
It all began with a family tragedy when my eldest brother was incarcerated in the early 1970s. The experience left a profound impact on my family, and it wasn't until the late 1980s when I started to volunteer. My goal was realized when I contributed to establish a Christian men's home, and eventually, I became a volunteer chaplain in the Sacramento County Jail for women.
In 2015, I extended my volunteering to the Folsom Women's Facility, where I launched the non-profit organization Project Hope Center. Our mission is to provide incarcerated women with residential placement services before their release, and in doing so, reduce recidivism.
Fast forward to 2022, and I have moved to Greer, South Carolina, where I am now a volunteer at the Greenville County Detention Center. Here, I provide reentry planning services for incarcerated women before their release, with the ultimate goal of reducing recidivism through personalized reentry placement services.
What’s happening now…
Religious volunteer inside Greenville County Detention Center (GDC) conducting bible studies with incarcerated women. Also have day re-entry program “Almost Home” inside GDC to meet with female inmates one-on-one to provide individualized re-entry planning that will include partnerships with community supportive resources that will be part of the pre-approved residential programs.
